When a patch is enough

A patch suits small to moderate damage when there is no sign of hidden water. A shallow repair may need one or two layers of patching compound. A deep one is built up like the original wall.

How a deep patch is built

Traditional stucco is applied in three coats over a base: a scratch coat, a brown coat and a finish coat. The Florida residential code spells out the waiting times between coats.

  • The second coat goes on no sooner than 48 hours after the first.
  • Each coat is kept moist for at least 48 hours before the next.
  • The finish coat goes on no sooner than seven days after the second.

Those are code minimums for new three-coat work, and a contractor may follow a different schedule for a small repair. Ask what the schedule is.

Fresh cement stucco cures best when it is kept slightly damp for the first days. In Tampa Bay sun, that often means misting a few times a day.

When a wider re-coat makes sense

Dozens of small patches on one wall can cost more than a new surface coat. A re-coat is considered when fine cracking and fading are widespread and the wall is dry underneath.

Neither choice is the right one until any hidden water is dealt with. See water and inspection.

Questions to ask about patching

  • Is this a patch, a repaired section or a re-coat, and why?
  • How many coats, and what is the waiting time between them?
  • How is the new texture matched to the old?
  • Is paint included, or is it a separate line?

Patching questions

Will a patch match the rest of the wall?

The texture can be matched closely. Color is harder, because patch color often shifts as it cures, which is why the wall is usually painted afterward.

How long before it can be painted?

Ask your contractor. Sources give no single number, because it depends on the mix, the weather and the thickness of the patch.
