Hairline cracks

A hairline crack is thinner than a credit card. Shrinkage as the stucco dried is the usual cause, and these cracks are mostly cosmetic.

They are still worth sealing. A thin crack lets rain in, and in Tampa Bay the rain often arrives sideways. Sealing and repainting is a small job compared with drying out a wall.

Cracks that need a closer look

Width alone does not decide it. Contractors and inspectors look for a set of signs together.

  • A crack wider than about 1/8 inch.
  • One side of the crack sitting higher than the other.
  • A stair-step pattern or a long, continuous line.
  • A crack that returns after it was patched.
  • Doors that stick, floors that slope, or cracks in the drywall inside.

Written guidance varies on the exact width. One Florida inspection checklist treats under 1 mm as fine and over 2 mm as wide. That spread is why a person looks at the wall instead of a number deciding it.

Patching a crack that is still moving does not hold. The movement has to be understood first, or the crack reappears.

What the repair involves

  1. Clean and open. Loose material is removed from the crack so the repair has something solid to bond to.
  2. Fill or patch. Thin cracks are filled with a flexible sealant or patching compound. Wider ones are routed out and patched.
  3. Match the texture. The surface is textured to blend with the wall around it.
  4. Cure, then paint. Wait for the patch to cure before painting. See painting after repair.

If the crack runs near a window, a roofline or the bottom of the wall, ask whether the wall is wet. The inspection page lists the signs.

Questions to ask about a crack

  • Is this crack still moving, and how do you tell?
  • Is the repair a flexible sealant or a patch, and why?
  • Will the wall be checked for moisture near the crack?
  • How will the texture and paint be matched?
  • What happens if it cracks again?

Stucco crack questions

Will a crack get bigger on its own?

A shrinkage crack usually stays put. A crack caused by movement tends to grow, which is why one that returns after patching needs a closer look.

Is the cost for a crack repair in the cost guide?

Yes. The cost guide lists typical ranges for crack repair, patching and painting.
